Sustainability
Miiko's products are born out of love for the magical power of northern nature. Domesticity, Finnish nature and responsible manufacturing have been our core values from the beginning. We want to increase the beautiful and sustainable, reduce the impractical and consuming. We design our products to withstand time and use. We make our products from the best natural materials in Finland.

In product design, we focus not only on stylish design, but also on timelessness and durability. The products must last for several years. Our collection does not consist of products from one passing season, which in the worst case scenario have to be thrown away. In product design, we feel that we succeed best when the products are both current and timeless at the same time. It is important to us that the users of our products love using them. The most popular products are usually used the longest and are also the best taken care of. Versatility is always at the center of our design philosophy. Our products almost always have several purposes of use, which increase the value and time of use of the products.
Finnish design has always been known for clarity, functionality and high quality. We want to continue this tradition. We are happy to tell you about the correct use and how to care of the products and encourage recycling of the products for new users. The longer the product lasts, the more ecological the product's life cycle is.
Our products are responsibly manufactured as local production in Finland
We are happy to have found skilled domestic manufacturers for all our products. It is a great honor to be creating work and jobs in Finland. The manufacture of our products requires strong craftsmanship. Domestic manufacturing and nurturing the craft tradition are things we don't want to give up. When the manufacturing sites are close by and we know our producers well, it is easy to ensure high quality and responsibility in manufacturing as well as good working conditions. As partners, we have chosen companies that pay attention to the environmental friendliness of production processes and aim for sustainable use of natural resources.
We have been awarded the Key Flag symbol, indicating a high degree of domesticity, and the Design from Finland mark, indicating Finnish design.
We choose carefully the materials we use
Ecology and ethics are important values in everything we do. We always demand high quality and environmental friendliness from the materials we use. We use materials produced nearby as much as possible to avoid unnecessary transport. We pack the products in environmentally friendly packaging. Our main materials are sustainably produced elk leather in Finland and domestic environmentally friendly birch.
The elk leather we use is sustainably produced by Kokkolan Nahka. Elk grow free in nature, and elk are never killed for their skin. Elk leather is obtained as a by-product of hunting, and hunting permits are the responsibility of the government.
Our birch plywood products are made by from domestic birch using environmentally friendly methods. The certificates show that the wood comes from responsibly and sustainably managed forests. Using certified wood ensures sustainable wood production, preservation of valuable natural sites and protection of waters near the forest.
In our decoration products we use other high-quality natural materials such as lamb's wool and cow leather. The wool we use is Mulesing-free. The wool felt of our Väre pillows is OEKO-TEX certified. About 30% of the material in our steel products is recycled metal. We print posters and postcards on certified, environmentally friendly paper.
The materials we choose we use responsibly
When using the materials, we strive for as little waste as possible, and we recycle the remaining material properly. We don't produce more than we need. We have a good follow-up and understanding of how much we need products. Often the products have already been sold before they are manufactured.
In product design, we always consider how we can use the material used in the product as accurately as possible. For example, we make smaller products from the leather of bags; purses, bracelets and keychains. We use the leather left over from the production of magazine racks and Rove leather boxes for towel clips and napkin holder straps.
Our product design is always guided by timelessness. We avoid one-season fashion colors and patterns. Instead, we design products that will be relevant even years from now. Sales during fast-changing seasons are not our thing, because we do not store large quantities of outdated products. Our passion is to design timeless classics that last from generation to generation.
Our responsible partners
As partners, we have chosen companies that pay attention to the environmental friendliness of production processes and aim for sustainable use of natural resources. Leather products are made in a leather sewing factory in Espoo, plywood products are made in Helsinki and South Savonia, kitchen towels are woven in Jokipii. In addition to these manufacturers, Miiko has several professional partners all over Finland.
